What we see on Apollo gates in Dallas

Apollo openers run their actuators straight from a 12V battery, kept charged by solar or a trickle charger. In Dallas they turn up on wrought iron swing gates, from driveway pairs in Kessler Park and Oak Cliff to larger leaves on estate drives. Heavy iron and clay soil are a poor mix for a low-voltage actuator. As posts move and leaves bind, current rises, voltage dips, and the board stops or reverses as though it hit something. Summer heat in the control box shortens battery life at the same time.

Apollo calls for 12 to 14 volts while the gate is running, and never below 11, so we measure under load. Then we check the gate swings freely, inspect the 816 actuator and its limit screws, and test the board. The 833/834 board must relearn after any power loss. On a 1650 the cord to the second actuator crosses the drive, and Apollo advises against cutting 816E cables because of the sensor wire inside, so a splice there is suspect. Distributors list the TITAN 12L as a bolt-in replacement for older 416 and 816 actuators.

Apollo gate repair in Dallas: questions

Why does my Apollo gate in Dallas get weaker as summer goes on?

Heat is hard on the battery, and many Dallas gates also bind more as the clay dries and posts shift. Both lower the voltage the actuator sees under load, and the board responds by stopping short or reversing. We test the battery under load, then check post and hinge alignment. Often one battery and a gate adjustment solve it.

Can you replace an Apollo solar panel and battery?

Yes. Apollo’s ETL manuals call for a sealed battery of at least 33 amp hours with top-mounted posts, not side terminals. Apollo sizes panel wattage to daily cycle count, and dual gates need double the panel. We size the replacement to your gate and use rather than fitting like for like, because a marginal system stays marginal.
