Most of this metroplex sits on Blackland Prairie clay that swells and shrinks by season, and almost everything we tell owners about leaning posts and heaving driveways assumes that. Azle is in the Cross Timbers, where the ground is limestone and rock, and gate posts behave completely differently in it.
They do not drift with the seasons the way a post in clay does — but a footing that was poured into a shallow rock pocket has nowhere to go and nothing to grip, and when it lets go it tends to do so suddenly rather than gradually. So the diagnosis reverses: in Fort Worth a leaning post is usually seasonal movement, and in Azle it is usually a footing that was never properly keyed into the rock.

It is more common here than east of Fort Worth, and the ground is why. In clay a post leans gradually as the soil moves with the seasons, so you get years of warning. In the rock out here a footing either holds or it does not, and a shallow one poured into a rock pocket can sit solid for a decade and then let go in a single wet spell. The repair is about keying properly into the rock rather than simply pouring more concrete.
