Our gate runs on solar and has got slow and unreliable. Is the panel the problem?
Usually it is the battery, and the panel only by association. Sealed batteries on gate operators have a working life of a few years and they fail gradually — the gate opens fine in the afternoon and struggles at dawn, which is the clearest sign. A panel shaded by a tree that has grown since the install will shorten that life, so we check both, and we size the replacement for the number of cycles you actually run rather than the number the box assumes.
Do you work on farm and paddock gates as well as the main entrance?
Yes. On acreage the entrance is rarely the only automated gate, and a wide farm gate has its own failure pattern — a long leaf, a post in ground that shifts, and hinges carrying more weight than they were chosen for. We would rather reset the post and the hinge than sell a stronger operator to pull against them, because the stronger operator tears the post out eventually.
